Profile supplied by GICSRD

With a distinguished career spanning over forty-five years in taxation, Professor Teju Somorin's profound impact on the Nigerian Tax System is immeasurable. The taxation journey of Teju, the only female Professor of Taxation in Nigeria, began in 1976 at the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), where she served diligently until she retired in 2010 as a Group Director in charge of Compliance and Enforcement Group (C&EG). Nevertheless, her contributions to taxation continues till today.

Thus, Prof. Olateju SOMORIN's immeasurable commitments and impact to the Nigerian Tax System, remains unrivalled. She served as the FIRS Board Secretary for 15 years, Secretary to the 1991 Study Group on Tax Reform, and the Value Added Tax (VAT) Technical Committee, heading the team that produced the Reports which recommended the introduction of VAT in Nigeria.

She is privileged to have headed three notable Tax Professional Bodies; as President of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) (the second female), the first female President of the West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI) and first female head, Association of African Tax Institutes, (AATI). She is the first female member of the Federal Government Tax Advisory Committee (TAC), a committee that saw to the emergence of the Finance Acts in 2019. She has proved her unique ability, astute knowledge and intellect to be able to blend academics with professionalism and excellence.

She has consistently participated to amendments to all the Nigerian Tax Laws, and contributed to the emergence of the National Tax Policy. Some of her enforcement activities as the leader of the Compliance team, led to the recovery in 2008 of over N500 billion in taxes, and the seizure of "NEPA" Building, in lieu of the unsettled tax liability of N2.2 billion.

She led the Research Group of the NESG in 2018 to produce 180- paged Report, on the Expanded Review of the Nigerian Tax System. Also, one of the three winners of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators' Competition.

A former FIRS Executive Chairman, Ifueko Omoigui Okauru, (MFR,) in her Foreword to Somorin's monumental books, TEJUTAX Reference Book ..…, remarked thus; "…she is a thorough professional who is well minded to add value to humanity, … by applying the knowledge and skills acquired in the course of a distinguished public career… This book illustrates this desire, …….and should be taken as Somorin's contribution and legacy to the overall reform of the Nigerian tax system." TEJUTAX … remains the first of its kind in Nigeria's history that combines the features of a dictionary and an encyclopedia in taxation.

Her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed, as she received numerous awards, including the prestigious 2016 All African Students Union Leadership Award as "Africa’s Most Outstanding Tax Administrator”, and 48 other tax awards. She has transferred Taxation knowledge to numerous students and professionals, not just because she has singly authored 152 publications in taxation, but through teaching and research supervisions, and had been involved in capacity building to FIRS, KWIRS and professional bodies such as the ANAN and the CITN.

Her dedication extends to serving as a member to the FIRS Board (2008-2010), the Joint Tax Board (2015-2017), and the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN). In 2018, Professor Somorin’s expertise led to her appointment as one of the eight fiscal commissioners, and she was eventually appointed as a co-chair of the Fiscal Policy Roundtable of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group (NESG) in 2019. She was a former Adjunct Associate Professor of Taxation and Fiscal Policy at both Babcock University, Ilishan, Ogun State and Igbinedion University, Okada

In November 2017, Professor Somorin became the first female professor of Caleb University, Lagos State, and its only female staff member on its Governing Council since June 2019.

She is a sought-after speaker, frequently serving as a moderator or discussant on public platforms.
